Advertising... How does it come across you?Maybe you just see adverting as a way to attract you in towards buying their product, or joining a membership subscription for example a gym or a hobby club. If you were asked to estimate the amount of money that is spent on advertising materials each year, what would be your answer?
Would you have guessed that £17 billion pounds is spent each year on advertising in the UK alone! This money is spent over a wide selection of methods to advertise their products, for example there is Television, radio, Internet, Bus, Billboard and Celebrity endorsements. This is so that more people know about the business and products that your trying to show off which for them will increase there business sales. Popularity is also and issue because if more people shop in there store it will keep the business going and to make aware to out of town customers that that particular shop is one they shouldn’t miss.
There are a lot of behind the scenes activities that most customers or citizens don’t see. This is all to do with making the advertising the best it can be to its potential. Celebrities might be brought in to show off the product which is basically saying to the general audience that if a celebrity is adverting it, then it must be good for you. To make the product and celebrity look good on posters, TV, or the internet then there is a lot of work from studio engineers to sort out a range of equipment ranging from lighting and its position, the clothes that the model(s) have to wear during filming, the location and most of all the model(s) expression of body language. This is all to help the selling potential of that product. Even the type of model(s) is being thought about in terms of is the model(s) either being skinny, fat or medium sized body, then there is the topic of are they handsome, dashing ugly and so on until they think it right.
Consumerism is about the purchase of goods and services that is being marketed as improving your life; these can be chocolates or comfort products such as clothes or make-up or even home products such as fridge’s as toasters. If this helps you, just think of how many other citizens it could possibly help.
Companies can also benefit from this in a way that they can make a prophet on the products they sell and the amount of them; Capitalism is the name of this because the most of the companies are there to make money and they are even owned by a few rich men who are still up for making money.

The Crisp advert (above right) which has recently been shown on antional tv, was making the point about packets of crisps and what is in them. Results show that whoever eats a bag of potato chips (35g) daily, consume 5 liters of cooking oil every year. this is making the point of even though it may look and taste great, it also has the bad side to having all that oil inside.
